Théatre en gradin
THEATER & MIXED PROGRAM
When we consider the built mass of the city of Chicago as a topography, we notice that each summit (skyscraper) is surrounded by a depression : empty spaces such as parks or relatively low buildings.
The site we need to build on is behind Trump Tower (north of the Loop and the Chicago River). We deciding to respect the topographic scheme of the city, we propose to not exploit the entire buildable height by creating a compact and dense building.
A breakthrough through the building connects the two levels of the surrounding streets and reduces the footprint of the latter.
Our wish is to offer housing in the city center with the same spatial and architectural qualities as suburban housing. Thus the shape of the step allows each accommodation to benefit from a large south-east facing terrace in order to make the most of the sunshine.
The plot is attached to Wabash Avenue, an artery on which, to the south, are located many theaters. Our project, located in the very north, also incorporates a theater in order to compensate for the lack, in this area of the city, of theaters and cultural and entertainment programs. Incorporating a marker program such as a theater gives the building an identity discernible to everyone in the city. We have used the principles of signage associated with this type of program to design the facade. Other additional programs also complete this building such as offices, shops, a cinema and a sports hall.
